Archives Artifacts: Honoring Veterans Through Song in the Cyd Charisse and Tony Martin Collection
November 22, 2024
As we honor veterans this November, we spotlight Tony Martin, a multi-talented Songbook artist and proud veteran whose contributions spanned both the entertainment world and military service. Martin's career as an actor and singer brought him into the homes and hearts of millions, but his time in uniform revealed another facet of his remarkable legacy.
A Star Enlists
By 1942, Tony Martin was a well-known Hollywood name, with appearances in films such as Follow the Fleet (starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers) and Pigskin Parade (Judy Garland’s first feature film). But when World War II called, Martin answered, enlisting in the United States Army Air Forces.
Recognizing his extraordinary talent, Captain Glenn Miller, leader of the Army Air Forces Training Command Orchestra, recruited Martin to join the ensemble. In his new role, Martin entertained troops and boosted morale across the Pacific Theater, delivering performances that bridged the gap between home and the frontlines.
A Trove of Memories
The Songbook Foundation’s Library & Archives preserves Martin’s heartfelt collection of letters and photographs from his service. These materials offer a rare glimpse into the life of a wartime entertainer, showing how music served as both a balm for soldiers and a reminder of the cultural ideals they were fighting to protect. Take a closer look at the letter.
Among the collection is a poignant performance photograph of Martin, who was considered by Captain Glenn Miller himself to be the best singer in the armed services. After joining Miller's band, Martin later said he felt as though he had "stumbled into heaven through the side door."
A Trove of Memories
Martin’s remarkable personal life intertwines with his professional achievements. Married for 60 years to iconic actress and dancer Cyd Charisse (Singin’ in the Rain, The Band Wagon), their shared Hollywood legacy spanned decades. Materials from their careers, especially photographs, further enrich the archive, showcasing their influence on American culture.
