GASF Docent Spotlight: Jim Arruda

April 20, 2020

The Great American Songbook Foundation has a dedicated team of docents, collections processors and Perfect Harmony volunteers who devote their time and talents to preserving and educating the Great American Songbook.

This week is National Volunteer week and we'll be showcasing one volunteer a day

This week's highlight: Jim Arruda

What brought you to the Songbook Foundation?

After my retirement from Lilly, I was surprised to find that I had some extra time on my hands. I started volunteering at the Songbook in 2015 after wandering around the Palladium during an "Open House Tour." I was impressed with the Gallery and the work going on behind the scenes, so I signed up.

When did you start volunteering for GASF?

January 2015

What do you enjoy most about volunteering for GASF?

I enjoy guiding visitors through the gallery exhibits, especially those who are visiting for the first time.

Who are your favorite musical artists or composers?

I enjoy listening to just about anything that Ella sings. Recently, I find myself listening to "Hamilton" more and more. Although, classical music (Bach, etc.) is my first choice in the car or home alone.

What are you watching, listening to or doing to keep yourself occupied in this time of social isolation?

During this time of social isolation, I've been working in the yard (Spring seems to come every year) and keeping the house afloat (sump pump is getting a real workout this year).

I'm happy when things are going well, and I must admit that things are going well at present, we're just not going anywhere.

Thank you for all you do, Jim!
