Have you ever written a song? Well, now is your chance...because today, we’re teaching a quick lesson in lyric writing!

There are great composers like George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers and Duke Ellington who wrote the music to some of our favorite Songbook tunes, while lyricists like Ira Gershwin, Oscar Hammerstein II, Gus Kahn and Cole Porter (who wrote music and lyrics) would focus on the words that really tell the listener a story.

Today is your chance to re-write the lyrics to the tune of two children’s songs you’ll likely know by heart. Scroll through the picture below for a step by step activity that you can do at home with the whole family. When you’re done, share your lyrics with your family, and feel free to record your song and tag us on Facebook @songbookfoundation.

Click Write a Song or the picture below to view the activity.

This is an ongoing blog series written by GASF docent and teacher, Sue Ackley. Sue focuses on the political musicals of our current gallery exhibit, Of Thee I Sing: Politics on Stage. Use these blogs to teach politics through a musical theater lens! Read this month's blog about 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and My Dearest Enemy here.

Our staff felt compelled to share a message of hope during this difficult time, and a reminder that music is a universal language that brings us closer together no matter our current state of social-distancing. Hear Chris Lewis, Renée La Schiazza and Chelsea Reynowsky sing a tune by the great Meredith Willson here.

Songbook Academy

The Songbook Academy is preparing to roll-out a new virtual series of archival footage from the past ten years of the program. Focusing on masterclasses with celebrity guest mentors such as Michael Feinstein, Broadway's Laura Osnes and American television writer and producer Marc Cherry, the series will premiere a new segment every Monday night as an opportunity for both entertainment AND education. This series will begin on Monday, May 11th and will debut on the Songbook Academy's Facebook page and Instagram TV

While you're stuck in quarantine, hone your acting, dancing, musicianship skills or learn an instrument! We've compiled a resource list for you to to pick up new skills and become inspired while you're stuck at home. You never know what you're capable of until you try it.

We're encouraging our alums to keep making music during this challenging time by asking them to submit their own covers of Songbook tunes via Instagram (follow us at @songbookacademy to see all of the covers)! Hear one of our first submissions by 2012 alum Eleri Ward here.

During our "The Music Man" watch party, we debuted 2017-'18 alum, Zoë Stewart, singing her version of "Lida Rose". Click "Lida Rose" to hear her cover! (spoiler alert: it's beautiful)

2018-'19 alum, Coen Sosa, performed with Michael Feinstein on the West coast at the end of February. We made sure he had the chance to sit down with Michael for a backstage Q&A.

What's up next? Look forward to further updates on the screening process, alum spotlights and the announcement of our 2020 Top 40 finalists at the end of April!
